Taste fair in Florence: food bloggers, chefs, foodies...

"Taste. In viaggio con le diversità del gusto" will be back at the Stazione Leopolda in Florence from 10 to 12 March, 2012: 3 days of tasting, excellence, shopping, events and lifestyle experiences dedicated to taste, plus the Fuoriditaste events around town.
This is the seventh edition of this national food fair: the place where the world’s best members of the haute gastronomie community gather, along with the ever-growing number of foodies, the people who seek out quality foods and new taste trends. The 2011 edition of TASTE welcomed 12,000 visitors (a 20% increase over the previous year), and enjoyed fantastic media coverage.
Beekeepers, master brewers, fisherman, experts in cooking equipment, sommeliers, food bloggers and many more are the ‘taste protagonists’, the people at the fulcrum of this year’s edition of TASTE,” says Agostino Poletto, deputy general manager of Pitti Immagine. "It is true,” he goes on to conclude, “that chefs are still the key figures in the more media-driven world of wines-and-foods, but new figures are coming forward – like the foodies who are enthusiastic about niche products and are creating new and unexpected interpretations for the industry.”

This edition of TASTE will feature about 250 firms selected among niche producers of excellence from nearly all the regions in Italy. They will present their products and latest creations in Florence. Over the years, TASTE has become an enjoyable and enthusing experience for members of the food and food service industries and the general public. It is a multi-sensory journey of discovery aimed at finding and defining the many ways we express and experiment tastes today.
  • Taste Tour an itinerary that will allow you to sample the products presented by the 250 exhibitors to become acquainted with – and learn more about – Italy’s gastronomic riches; there will be lots of things, old and new, to discover, from the concentrated white truffle cream to ground dried capers, from salami to wine, from aged cow cheese to mild pecorino, from handmade pasta from Italy’s major pasta factories to figs preserved in balsamic vinegar, to saffron liqueur, to chocolates filled with Limoncello cream to red eggplant jam to….!
  • Taste Tools is the area dedicated to designer food and kitchen items, tools for chefs and for those who love to cook – from kitchenwear to professional kitchenware.
  •  Taste Shop is the “department store” for exclusive foods – with over 1,500 items in the catalogue and sales exceeding 21,000 pieces last season. This is where to buy what you see and taste around the fair;
  • Taste Ring, is the cultural-gastronomic arena orchestrated by Gastronaut Davide Paolini who was recently elected “Person of the Year” in the poll conducted by the online daily Italia a Tavola. In this area devoted to debates and ideas, the leading players on the food stage challenge each other on the most interesting topics related to contemporary eating, from foods to flavors, interpreting what is happening today and anticipating the trends of tomorrow.
The many events around the city, under the FuoriDiTaste banner were also a huge success with the public and the press. Here is a taste of some of the special projects at TASTE 2012:
  • King of Catering: the competition among the best catering and banqueting firms of 2011, is organized by Bisol, who have been making wine in the Valdobbiadene area since 1542, and is sponsored by Mondadori. The theme for finalists in this second edition, and a very important topic for all catering companies is the “Wedding Reception”. The competition will be held on Friday, 9 March at the Four Seasons Hotel in Florence; a prestigious panel will judge, the first and main courses, the dessert, the entire menu and the service.
  • The Casaviva Vintage Table: the magazine Casaviva will be participating in this edition of TASTE. Is vintage a real trend? Martina Liverani, the editorial staff foodie, will be at TASTE in the Casaviva stand to talk about recipes, tables, curiosities and anecdotes – and strictly nostalgia colored.
  • The genie in the pot: tasty recipes at TASTE 7! Pitti Immagine decided to involve a dozen talented food bloggers to celebrate the contemporary foodie spirit of TASTE 7 and highlight a spreading phenomenon. They will be busy preparing tasty dishes made with ingredients provided by some of the exhibitors. And then, the recipes will be published on dedicated page on the Pitti Immagine website, buon appetito!
… and flavors spread around Florence with FuoriDiTaste

FuoriDiTaste is the calendar of “outside the fair” events that brings Florence into the heart of TASTE and features the city’s restaurants, gourmet shops, boutiques, art galleries, theaters and museums. FuoriDiTaste will light up the city and its places of excellence with theme tasting sessions and dinners, entertainment and new ways of presenting quality foods. The last edition of FuoriDiTaste met with huge public and critical acclaim. The roughly 100 events held in just as many venues transformed Florence in a festival of quality foods and excellent cooking.

Good wine bar in Florence where you can eat for cheap

Last saturday I went to Sweet Bar, a small wine bar not far from the center of Florence. It's a cosy place owned by 3 smart guys. You can find some of the best wine in town and some dishes from the kitchen: appetizers, first courses and some salads with vegetables, ham, fish... I ordered a gorgeous "Tagliatelle con tartufo" (=with truffle). Excellent! Only 12 euros.
The wine bar is nice, full of local people: young couples, guys coming out from the gym, moms with kids... If you don't speak italian don't worry, ask of Aliosha: he speaks english!

Best ice cream in Florence, Italy

A five-minute walk from Uffizi Gallery and Palazzo Vecchio this small "Gelateria de' Neri" dishes out superior sorbets and ice creams. The flavours are always changing, many ice cream flavours are innovative (be sure to try the ricotta cheese and figues).  Classics such as cioccolato (=chocolate), fior di latte (=white cream) and stracciatella (cream with pieces of chocolate) are supplemented by seasonal specials (strawberries, melon, peach, lemon...). I enjoyed the bittersweet intensity of the green tea and the pistacchio flavour ( creamy flavour of nuts from Bronte, a Sicilian city known for its pistachio).
All ices are made in house.
Two-flavour cones cost 2.50 euros.

Winetown: Florence the location of a special wine festival in courtyards and cloisters of historical buildings

At the end of September, 2011, there will be a great event in Florence: Winetown, a wine festival with a lot of events. What's going on in Florence for the Winetown wine festival? here are some tips:
  • Shows and concerts that enliven the tastings of fine wines inside important Historical Buildings that will be open to the public only for this special occasion.
  •  There will be cooking shows, a discussion and reflection on the design of the bottle and new technology on the second floor of the "San Lorenzo" Central Market.
  • The treasure hunt through the streets of the historical center
  • The game Vinopoli for children to play.
Two intense days, complete with an unusual itinerary and an unconventional way of bringing wine and people together.

Opening hours:
Saturday 24 September 2011 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Sunday 25 September 2011 from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The tastings will be conducted during the opening hours of the event upon purchasing the WineCard.

WHAT IS WINE TOWN
Wine town is a new concept and way of communicating the territory: to enhance the wine making tradition in a different context than usual, the idea to open the great private buildings of the nobility of Florence, which will then be rediscovered by the general public. Wine Town 2011, with the support of Toscana Promozione, the City of Florence and the Wine Town Committee, is a permanent annual event. WINE TOWN will take place in Florence on Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th. The city of wine, the city that for its past was left with skills which were stratified by centuries of daily practice in the fields of tradition and therefore demands more than anything else, the right to be represented by one of its many strong themes. In short, the capital of the Chianti region, the lands of Tuscany, the Sangiovese, the great and historic families in the vineyards where they have always been and where most of them have withstood the difficult years of depopulation and, finally, many fond producers who, in recent decades have reshaped, reevaluated and requalified agricultural land, restoring the fabric of rural construction in Tuscany. 10 themes or ten points of view to talk about wine, architecture, art, archeology, marketing, communication, innovation and children’s play.
Ten is also the number of the provinces represented by different food products and the most important chefs in the ten Territories.

Open cellars in Tuscany: Villa of Vignamaggio

VIGNAMAGGIO adheres to the happening Open Cellars 2011. You can visit the garden, the "Pomarium" and the winery in Greve in Chianti, Firenze. Guided tours will be conducted at 11 and 12 a.m. and at 3, 4 and 5 p.m.
29th of May 2011 - CANTINE APERTE
Vignamaggio is a small Renaissance gem, its setting still very similar to the original. The core of the villa dates back to the XIV century, but its current look is the one given at the end of the XVI century by the Gherardi family who had purchased it from the Gherardinis. A girl was born here in 1479 to a member of the family, the famous Mona Lisa whose portrait was subsequently painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Inside the Renaissance Villa, listed in the "Historical Building of Italy" there are double bedrooms and romantic suites with antique furniture and bed linen made exclusively for Vignamaggio.

Florence Wine Event 2010

The 4th edition of the Florence Wine Event will take place in the prestigious setting of Cortile dell’Ammannati Palazzo Pitti on Friday 19th from 16,00 to 21,00, on Saturday 20th from 11,00 to 21,00 and on Sunday 21st from 11,00 to 20,00.
The Florence Wine Event is a fantastic occasion for the enological world as well as an event promoting the Florentine Oltrarno.

There will be over 100 wineries predominantly coming from Tuscany, which means that a visitor will be able to choose among 250 different types of wine.
All the wineries involved represent the excellence in the wine world, so that you will be able to taste Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di MOntepulciano, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Morellino di Scansano and a wide range of Chiantis both from the Classico and from the Colli Fiorentini and Rufina districts. There will also be many Supertuscans by celebrated wineries as well as many natural and biological wines.
The producers themselves will present their wines and it will be possible to talk with them about the quality and the procedures of their work.
Moreover there will be several estates from the North-East of Italy (Friuli and Veneto) featuring white wines, sparkling wines and other enological products.
Qualified sommeliers will initiate people to Grappa, this made by the participating wineries, a fascinating discovery of another Italian product.
The Florence Wine Event is a great festival where you will be able to taste an extraordinary selection of Italian wines in a unique setting.
To join in the sampling you will only have to buy the 10 euro Sampling Kit at the entrance of Palazzo Pitti.. This includes a glass, a small shoulder bag, the catalogue and a drink card valid for 12 samples.
The Florence Wine Event offers not merely an extraordinary opportunity of tasting. In fact it gives you the chance to experience this charming and still very traditional district of Florence with its tangled narrow streets departing from Palazzo Pitti towards San Frediano and boasting a great variety of restaurants and clubs, craft and antique shops as well as fashionable and vintage clothing boutiques.

There will be also several Extraevents offering selected enogastronomical occasions, all of them taking place in the Oltrarno area, in the neighbourhood of Palazzo Pitti.
All these events will feature a combination of wine and food inspired by Tuscan tradition in which the local hosts will propose special menus matching the wines. Last but not least there will be some handicraft exhibitions emphasizing the skill and work of the Oltrarno artisans. Videos and films about wine in its past and present connections will also accompany the events.

Chef in Tuscany

Lately there's a bit fashion to pay someone to come and cook at home: in short, a chef to prepare dinner for a special event. Knows something the good Arturo Dori who left the Black Cabbage ("Cavolo nero" restaurant in Florence) in order to dedicate himself to this activity.
How does the chef at home?
The chef takes care of all: does the shopping, food preparation, equipment, imbadisce the table, serve food, cleans everything ( I like especially this! ).
A reader writes to tell me a site where you can book just a cook at home (I did not understand if they work in all of Tuscany but I assume that at least in and around Florence is). I read on the site that they do for tourists who book a Tuscan villas.
Interesting ...

CANTINE APERTE 2009

Together with my family I visited the Castello da Verrazzano, one of our Chianti jewels. There was a good occasion to visit this castle because of the open cellars 2009, a week end dedicated to wineries. We visited the garden (very well maintained), the tower and the sign dedicated to Verrazzano, the sailor who discovered the Hudson Bay. Then we visited the cellars with its enormous barrels (80hl!) and finally the tasting. We had two red wines and something to eat together.
At the end of the tasting we proceeded towards another close by castle, the Castello of Vicchiomaggio, once a Medici residence, but unfortunately we didn’t have any visits or tastings because their cellars were only open at 11am and at 4,30pm (too late for us).

Free tasting at Bardini restaurant and a cheap place to eat

On Saturday March 14 from 11am (for the press) and from 3,30pm (for everybody) there will be an event of TASTE at MOBA, the restaurant of Villa Bardini.
There will be an exhibition and taste with Salemi products at the presence of Oliviero Toscani, creativity councilor and Vittorio Sgarbi, major of the Sicilian town. They will present various products from Salemi, famous for the making of the bread, called Saint Joseph bread (I Pani di San Giuseppe). You can find more info on MOBA blog.

Then, I spoke many times about the Osteria del Santo Bevitore, a nice and traditional restaurant in Santo Spirito area ran by two guys, lovers of good food. Beside the restaurant, they opened a small place called il Santino where you can have food from 10am to 10pm. It is a perfect place for a quick cheap lunch, a break with friends, a snack or an aperitif, tasting different kind of cheeses, hams, sauces but also biscuits, wine, also organic wines not only from Italy but also from France.
You will not find long buffet tables, noisy people and loud music but a place to relax, enjoy food and chill out. I had a plate of anchovies from Viareggio with small tomatoes and big capers, some cheeses and cut meats, and finally a special apple pie with a Passito from Pantelleria!
