Giorgio Winspeare, famous for organizing the “4 inches heel party”, suggested me an event on Wednesday June 10th at TINA, Bardini terrace (Costa San Giorgio 6). Obika mozzarella bar

Obika is a new place in Florence in the fashion district. It is in the Tornabuoni palace on the homonymous street and you can choose from three different things: lunch, aperitif at the Mozzarella Obika bar or a dinner at the Osteria Tornabuoni.

Yesterday I tried the aperitif and it was worth to pay € 9, 00.
In the small courtyard of the palace the atmosphere is cosy and elegant, tranquil with soft music and a care environment. Different kind of food and all presented very well.
I had a cosmopolitan and it was the best I had so far.

You can find different kind of people, from the most stylish couple to the informal tourist who is reading a book while sipping a Mojito drink, business men or a table with girlfriends: a very nice place in the heart of Florence.

Opening party at Bardini Terrace

Last night I went to an opening party of the American Bar “TINA” by MOBA, at the Bardini Terrace, together with a couple of friends (the kind owners of a Boutique B&B in Florence). It was as beautiful as last year and it seems very promising. They have added some comfortable sofas at the ground floor, close to the restaurant, where I spent most of the night after my fancy high shoes started to hurt really bad (why didn’t I bring my new purple ballerinas that I bought from romanofirenze this afternoon???) . We had a really good time even though it came some raindrops, and there were a lot of people. I also bumped into some friends from Santo Bevitore and Santino (two restaurants in Florence), as always very pleasant to meet them.

Anyway from tonight ,if the weather allows it, they will be open:

The Best Aperitivo in Florence

Aperitivo is one of Italy’s most charming traditions and one of Florence’s best kept secrets. The term is just a rough translation of the English “cocktail.” In terms of history and etymology, that is what it is. Somewhere in Turin some years ago, some gentleman invented something called vermouth, paired it with light snacks and proposed it as an “opening” to the evening meal.

Over 2 centuries aperitivo has evolved to become the evening meal. Nowadays in Italy, it is customary for the locals en route from work to stop by a favourite bar or club, partake in a cocktail with friends and enjoy a veritable buffet of pastas, vegetables, finger sandwiches, salads and, yes, even light snacks. A leisurely aperitivo eliminates the hassle of preparing a proper meal after a long day at the office, and it comes at a much smaller cost than dinner at a restaurant. On average, the price for one drink and access to the spread is between 7 and 10 euro.
The second course (the one involving meat) is not a typical component of aperitivo. A choice of first courses (pasta or rice), a number of side dishes and a selection of breads and sauces usually make up the evening’s menu. In bars, you are likely to find the day’s left over sandwiches on offer as well, and, in some venues, you may even find ethnic dishes.
Hours for aperitivo are usually between 7 and 9 p.m. The locals tend to arrive a little later, so follow suit if you’re looking to fit in, but be sure not to wait too long. The kitchen only prepares as much food as it expects to serve. If you really want to get a seat, avoid the locali near movie theatres and avoid them especially on Wednesdays (when the new releases are featured). If, on the other hand, you opt for aperitivo on a night of Fiorentino soccer, you are sure to have your choice of tables at any venue.

OIBO' a nice place for a drink

Few steps from the beautiful Piazza Santa Croce, at the corner with via de’ Benci, stands a modern, essential bar where you can taste delicious food and drinks, aperitifs, but also lunches. Even if it is located in one of the most touristic areas of Florence, the bar is full of young florentine too.

The aperitif buffet is open every day from 6,30pm until 9,30pm: perfect before going to Theatre Verdi few meters from OIBO’. You can find, finger food, cous cous, pasta, meat, focacce, salad and other delicatessen. While I was taking some pictures, I was blindingly obvious by a bottle called FI.GA, an allusive play on words of an Italian bad word, that it is only a beverage with a guaranà base.
I tasted and it was good. They explained me they use to do cocktails.
As I said before you can taste also something for a cheap lunch and if you are in the area I highly recommend it. The interior design is nice and well cared.

Flo, the coolest place in Florence of Summer 2008

If you wish to avoid the heat of the Florence centre and you want enjoy something nice you have to take bus number 12 or 13 from the main station of Santa Maria Novella and you go up until Piazzale Michelangelo, the terrace overlooking one of the most beautiful view of the world. Then you might need some refreshment and the right place is called FLO’. The place is nice but the interior decoration is like all the others lounge places. Squared-little tables, large sofas coloured in black and white with a small red touch. There is also a little dance floor surrounded by law white tables, a bar area with high metal tables and in the middle of the plants some tables for privé.

The location is perfect as said and the place, when we arrived, was already packed. We found a little corner with big pillows put on the floor in the Arab manner and we started to look up at our menu. Cocktails (alcoholic or alcohol free) were € 8, 00, a glass of wine was € 6, 00. I had a Gewürztraminer and the girl asked me ten Euros. She said the first glass is always 10 Euros, ok it was written in small corner of the menu.

Among our circle of friends we met also Andrea, the owner of Da Burde restaurant, one of the historical trattorias of Florence that started to chat with Supersimo about organizing a big party this coming fall…
This is another chance to spend sometime in a cool place, even if on Monday night it was not cool at all.

Lounge bar open til late in Florence

I was asked in many cases advises for a place open until late at night, in Florence, Italy.
Well here it is, Pantheon lounge in Via della Fornace, just before the Rooms club in Piazza Ferrucci.
I was skeptical after reading an article in another web site but then I decided to try. A fantastic setting made with sofas, mirrors, soft lights. A perfect place where you can sit and relax in comfortable sofas while you chat with friends: they are open until 3am! The cocktails are nothing special and the music is too loud for me but this is really a nice place. Night birds this is the right place for you!

Any American College student understands the desire to want to find the best deal possible. We all know our tendencies to want to stretch the worth of our dollar. Fortunately for those college students studying in Florence, they are in luck. Apperitivos are a great way of enjoying a great glass of wine or trendy cocktail as well as a meal comprised of the complimentary taste treats served alongside.

Apperitivos (aperitivo, in Italian) are generally served anytime between 18:00 and 21:00. To avoid being blatantly obvious that you’re American, I would suggest frequenting an apperitivo bar anytime after 19:00 or 19:30. Depending on the bar you choose, the appetizer type treats will vary. However you are sure to find a great atmosphere as well as a fresh breathe of the Italian culture.

Colle Bereto, located in Piazza Strozzi just through the arches of Piazza Repubblica, is this season’s trendiest apperitivo bar. For 8 euro you can order a delectable cosmopolitan from one of the friendly staff members in this very fashionable atmosphere. Choosing to sit either inside in the warmly lit bar or outside on the large patio with heat lamps, grab your plate to sample the wide range of taste treats. Enjoy chicken wings, pasta salads, savory tarts, dips, vegetables, or glass noodles.
Slowly is another great apperitivo bar just to the left of Colle Bereto and up the block. Similar to Colle Bereto this is a great place for Americans to go to observe fellow Italians.

Trendy as well, Slowly offers tiny sandwiches, guacamole and tortilla chips, bread and dips, as well as cheese. Another special addition is a crudités brought to your table with savory breads and dips. Be sure to try Italy’s popular beverage, a negroni while there. While there is no outdoor seating, one will be sure to feel comfortable inside Slowly in its gently lit ambiance while listening to trendy songs and chatting amongst friends.

Balduccis is a great place for apperitivos if you’re in the mood for a neighborhood environment. Located on Via Marconi, near number 58, Balduccis takes you away from the center and instead hosts the locals. This is a great place to visit after a long day at work or school, to enjoy apperitivos without having to worry about being trendy enough. It is clear that there is a familiar crowd inside but everyone is completely welcoming to newcomers. Being smaller than Slowly and Colle Bereto be sure to get there early to grab a table, and enjoy the wonderful bar snacks. Delicious mini sandwiches, little pizzas, nuts, breads, pickled vegetables, and chips line the bar table in Balduccis. Grab a glass of wine with some girlfriends for 6 euro or choose to split a bottle between you for around 20-25 euro.

Apperitivos are a great idea for college students because it is not only a great bargain but it also encourages you to get together with friends. Living in a big city, places like Colle Bereto, Slowly, or Balduccis serve as great meeting places. While you may be splitting a bottle of wine between American friends you’ll be drinking it in the company of fellow Italians, a great way of absorbing the culture while satisfying your appetite.

One last recommendation : even if Italians are usually very indulgent and friendly, drinking too much is not considered elegant. And most of all, may get you in trouble! So, have a nice aperitivo but do not exaggerate!

Jazz music in Florence

If you like live music.. jazz music.. there's a little club in the center of Florence, where you can find good music and a nice atmosphere. It's not easy to find it, if you don't know where it is, since it lies in a very narrow "vicolo" (=street) of Florence. Not far from the Duomo, nor from santa Croce. To enter you have to pay a fee for a club card. But it costs only 5 euros..

From his huge repertory, that he plays with ability and warmth, Alberto Ferrarese, one of the most important jazz singer in Florence, presents an anthology which goes from 30s to 60s.

One of the first jazz orchestra in Tuscany, born in 1994, which already played with big artists as Ed Neumeister, Marco Tamburini, Stefano “Cocco” Cantini, Gianluigi Trovesi, Pietro Tonolo, Rudy Migliardi, Stefano Bollani, Roy Paci. From 2002 also the extraordinary Canadian singer Maria Loscrebo is part of the orchestra.

Friday 20th ALEX GONFIANTINI BLUES BAND. Alex Gonfiantini: voice and guitar; Carlo Bonamico: bass; Antonio Masoni: keyboards; Cosimo Marchese: drums. An only nineteen years old talent makes his debut at Jazz Club. When he was only sixteen he was on the stage of Pistoia Blues, at 17 he opend the second night at Turrita blues, at eighteen he played at Bordighera Jazz & Blues. Keep an eye on him!
Saturday 21st From 21 p.m. Fiesta española with GIGI CARDIGLIANO GROUP. Gigi Cardigliano: guitar, voice; Domingo: guitar; Gaia and Daniela: flamenco dance. Flamenco, paella and sangria.

Tuesday 24th JAM SESSION + HOUSE BAND. Tonigh latin jazz, with the House Band with Marco Pezzola: piano; Carlo Bonamico: bass; Pepe Bonanno: drums. But Jam Session is free and open to any kind of jazz…

Wednesday 25th BARBUTO in “Sabor particular”. Pablo Marini: guitar; Francesco Notarbartolo: bass; Lorenzo Nardi : drums; Lisandro Cancellieri: congas, bongos. A repertory of Caribbean music, mostly Cuban music: from the classics of son, rumba and bolero by Compay Segundo, Arsenio Rodriguez, Perez Prado to the songs of more recent authors as Poncho Sanchez and Marc Ribot, all under the influence of blues, funk and rock, to obtain a really particular and sweeping sound.

Friday 27th MICHELA LOMBARDI + SANTARNECCHI – VERNUCCIO -MARCHESE TRIO. Michela Lombardi: voice; Franco Santarnecchi: piano; Nicola Vernuccio: double bass; Cosimo Marchese: drums. One of the best young singer in Italian jazz, with very good vocal qualities and expressive intensity.

Saturday 28th "COAT AND CAMEL". Leonardo Boni and Roberto Uggiosi: guitars and voices. With their mostly acoustic repertory across cotton plantations, railways and shanty towns of the south of the USA, beginning with 20s. A new ironic reading of ragtime and blues-swing songs by artists as Sam Chatmon, Sonny Terry, Browie McGee etc.; all the love for this kind of music in their version of more recent authors' songs, such as John Fogarty and Lennon-McCartney.
